Jaylen Brown has responded to a clip of him appearing to critique Bronny James’ NBA potential that has gone viral.

On Monday (July 15), Brown was in attendance at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas to watch his Boston Celtics’ summer league team take on James and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics star, who was seen sitting next to WNBA player and recent ESPY’s date Kysre Gondrezick and Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese, appears to tell Gondrezick that he doesn’t believe that “Bronny is a pro” based on James’ performance during his time on the court.

Not long after, footage of Brown’s seeming appraisal of Bronny surfaced online, leading social media users and sports pundits to weigh in. Some shared their own reactions to Brown’s alleged words, which some agreed with and others saw as negative or unwarranted, while others took the opportunity to share their own critiques of Bronny and Brown himself.

However, Brown would later respond to a social media post sharing his supposed critique of Bronny with one of his own, in which he shared glowing words regarding the former USC Trojan and his opportunity to play with his father, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

“It’s a flex to have your son alongside you in the nba it reflects greatness and longevity,” Brown wrote in reference to the four-time NBA champ. “Bronny has all the tools around him to be successful I look forward to watching his growth.”

Brown’s seeming judgement of Bronny James’ skills is the latest to garner headlines, but far from the first, as both supporters and detractors of his professional journey have been vocal in sharing their opinions regarding the 19-year-old’s ability to succeed in the NBA.

Despite having an underwhelming freshman season at USC, a portion of which he missed after undergoing a medical procedure to repair a congenital heart defect, James was selected with the No. 55 overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft.

Thus far, Bronny has shown brief glimpses of talent during summer league play, but his performance has not tempered the criticism aimed at him, as he’s shot poorly from the field and has failed to crack double digits in scoring in a single game.

Yet, players’ performance in summer league is not always an indicator as to how they’ll perform during an NBA regular season, as stars such as Atlanta Hawks guard and perennial All-Star Trae Young also had a lackluster showing ahead of his rookie season.
