D’Angelo Ortiz, son of David Ortiz, drafted by Red Sox

Today, the Boston Red Sox have announced they have drafted D’Angelo Ortiz in the 19th round (567th overall) of the 2024 MLB draft. D’Angelo, aged 20, most recently played for the Miami Dade College Sharks. For those who somehow don’t know, D’Angelo’s father, David Ortiz, is a Boston sports legend. During his decade-and-a-half-long career with the Red Sox, David was a 10x All-Star, 6x Silver Slugger, and 3x World Series champion. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Father-son duos run rich in baseball history and are currently a hot topic in sports media. Ken Griffey and Griffey Jr. both tore up the MLB in their times. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is doing his father, Vlad Sr, very proud. In fact, D’Angelo is not even the only son of a famous Red Sox player to be selected in this year’s draft. Manny Ramirez ‘s son, Lucas Ramirez, was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in this year’s 17th round.

Much like his father, D’Angelo seems to be a gifted hitter. Unlike his father, and despite his 6’1″ and 190lb frame, he is more equipped for contact than power. During D’Angelo’s 43 games with the Brockton Sox in 2022, he slashed .329/.435/.355 with 50 hits and no home runs. Before being drafted, he was hitting .328 with a single home run for Miami Dade. Also like his father, D’Angelo is an infielder, but avoids first base. He spends most of him time on the opposite side of the diamond at third.

His father’s legacy aside, D’Angelo Ortiz is a perfectly acceptable prospect for the Red Sox. If he can add some power to his batting, his value will increase dramatically. His defense at third could use improvement as well. D’Angelo only has a .780 fielding percentage at the position. Still, unlike a particular father-son combo currently dominating headlines, D’Angelo Ortiz actually deserves the opportunity he is receiving.
