Five trade targets who could fuel Red Sox's unexpected postseason push

As the Major League Baseball season moves into the second half, the Boston Red Sox are in an unexpectedly strong playoff position.

With 67 games left, the Red Sox (53-42) have a 52.9% chance to make the playoffs, according to FanGraphs, a significant rise from the 24.1% probability at the season's start.

At third in the AL East, Boston is 4.5 games out of first and 3.5 behind the New York Yankees for second.

A major driving force behind this resurgence is All-Star Game MVP and center fielder Jarren Duran, who boasts a 5.0 bWAR, and starting pitcher Tanner Houck, who has a stellar 2.54 ERA and 1.034 WHIP in 117 innings.

However, big questions remain, particularly regarding the starting pitching depth and the need for reliable bridge pitchers to support closer Kenley Jansen.

As the Red Sox eye a potential leap over the mighty Yankees and Baltimore Orioles, these five trade targets could provide the necessary boost at the trade deadline (July 30, 6 p.m. ET).

Jack Flaherty, RHP, Detroit Tigers

The 28-year-old right-hander, who signed a one-year, $14 million contract, has rebounded well from an injury-plagued 2023, posting a 3.32 ERA in 16 starts. With the Tigers seven games out of a wild-card berth, they will likely be sellers, making Flaherty a viable No. 2 option for Boston.

Garrett Crochet, LHP, Chicago White Sox

Given Flaherty's injury history, the Red Sox might consider targeting a second bona fide starter. According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, Crochet is considered a trade candidate. At just 25, Crochet won't be a free agent until 2027, so acquiring him would require a significant haul of prospects. Crochet leads the majors in strikeouts with 150 and has an impressive 2.36 FIP.

Miguel Andujar, LF, Oakland Athletics

The former Yankee could also be a valuable addition. Andujar is slashing .281/.306/.382 in 178 at-bats and is under team control until 2026 and could bring needed balance to the Red Sox's lefty-heavy lineup.

Trevor Richards, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays

Richards is another name to watch. In June, he posted a 1.23 ERA in 14 2/3 innings over 11 outings and is an affordable rental option at $2.15 million.

Jose Urena, RHP, Texas Rangers

If the defending champion Rangers continue to fade, Urena might become available. Having a career year with a 3.13 ERA in 69 innings, Urena is a versatile option capable of starting or relieving and only earning $1.75 million.
