Red Sox to develop intriguing 2024 draft pick as a two-way player

The 2024 MLB draft has now concluded, and all 30 teams drafted some young players that they hope will help their major league rosters at some point in the future.

The Boston Red Sox selected 20 players , including 14 pitchers, which seems like a targeted plan prior to the draft.

One of the most intriguing prospects that Boston hopes to add to their farm system over the three-day event is eighth-round pick Conrad Cason out of Greater Atlanta Christian High School in Georgia.

The 17-year-old is a two-way player, who both pitched and played shortstop to help him with Gatorade Player of the Year in Georgia last season.

Perhaps the most interesting thing is that Boston will try to keep him pitching and hitting if he signs with the team and forgoes his commitment to Mississippi State.

“Our group was actually a little bit split on it. We had some guys that liked him better as a pitcher and other guys that liked him better as a hitter,” said Red Sox amateur scouting director Devin Pearson (via. MassLive ). “On both sides, you have an elite athlete who can throw 100 mph and hit balls very far. We will take that bet and see where he best fits but we’re going to develop him as a two-way player.”

This past year, Cason tossed 43 2/3 innings and finished with a 0.48 ERA and 0.85 BAA while striking out 99. He also hit .364 with three home runs, 28 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.
