Kenley Jansen talked about what he expects from the Red Sox at the trade deadline

Kenley Jansen’s take on the trade deadline: The Major League Baseball trade deadline is set for Tuesday, July 30, at 6 p.m.

Exactly what Red Sox management intends to do before that remains to be seen. Boston currently sits third in A.L. East with a 53-45 record. The first post-All-Star series was a disaster for Alex Cora’s team, as Boston was swept over the weekend in Los Angeles by the Dodgers, dropping the Red Sox one game out of the final wild card spot.

Still, the trade deadline provides the final window for the Red Sox to potentially upgrade the roster. What the team needs is up for debate, though closer Kenley Jansen recently weighed in when asked by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

“You can never go wrong adding more pitching,” Jansen told Cotillo. “Another right-handed bat will be helpful. We’ll see how it goes.”

The Red Sox currently hold the eighth lowest ERA in the league as a pitching staff (3.71), and are 11th in runs scored per game (4.68).

Despite a number of injuries, and a lack of significant offseason moves, Boston has stayed in the playoff race. Does Jansen think the Red Sox deserve an effort from the front office to make additions?

“Yeah, but at the end of the day, they know what they have planned,” Jansen explained. “They probably have their five-year plan or something. But this is a great team. We should be competing. We’ll see what’s going to happen here down the road.”

The Red Sox lost to the Dodgers 9-6 on Sunday as Los Angeles completed the three-game sweep. Boston now heads into a series in Colorado against the Rockies tonight at 8:40 a.m.

Tomorrow, veteran players report to Patriots training camp, with the first practice (which will be open to the public) set to begin on Wednesday morning.
