A comparison of undrafted role player contracts; Sam Hauser and Duncan Robinson

Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser just signed his extension for four years, 45 million dollars. This was a steal for the Celtics, as his comparable, Miami Heat wing Duncan Robinson, was signed for double that in 2021.

Hauser’s career averages are seven points, three rebounds and one assist and he had a career best season in 2023-24 with nine points, three and a half rebounds, and one assist per game. As for Robinson, his career averages are 11 points, three rebounds and two assists per game, including last season when he averaged 13 points, two and a half rebounds and three assists per game.

The difference? Hauser is being paid 11.25 million dollars per year, while Robinson is being paid 18 million per year, as his contract is five years, 90 million dollars. That is the biggest contract for an undrafted player in NBA history. The Heat are paying double what the Celtics are paying, for a player who averages only four more points and just one more assist.
