A T live tracking app is in the works. Here’s what we know.

The T is in the process of beta testing a new mobile application that will provide riders with real-time information for their commute, a spokesperson confirmed.

As many Boston commuters know, predicting the T’s arrival can be a bit like trying to read tea leaves … followed by a mad dash through Park Street Station.

But with a new mobile app currently in beta testing, the MBTA is looking to add some clarity.

“General Manager [Phil] Eng recently challenged the team to develop a mobile application that provides real-time information to riders, aiming to improve their daily commute experience and empower them to make better-informed decisions about their travel,” MBTA Chief of Communications Gabrielle Mondestin said in a statement to Boston.com.

“Innovation and transparency are his key priorities, and improving communication is incredibly important,” she wrote.

Reddit user Doctrina_Stabilitas offered a sneak peek from the app’s closed beta testing earlier this week, writing, “It’s pretty bare bones right now since it doesn’t do routing yet (very much a beta app), but if you’re just looking for the next time a bus is arriving it’s good for that, and for people’s commute that’s often 90% of what you need if you always take the same route.”

The app’s working name appears to be MBTA Go, according to Doctrina_Stabilitas, who also noted that all of the T’s public transit modes are included on the platform.

The new MBTA app wouldn’t be the first of its kind; over the years, several independent online and mobile applications have offered arrival predictions, navigation help, and trip planning for T riders.

But according to Mondestin, the final version of the MBTA’s new app is still a ways out.

“We’re still in the early stages and will continue adding features throughout the beta-testing phase and beyond,” she said. “We will update the public as soon as we have more concrete information and are prepared to move forward.”
