BOSTON, Mass. (SHNS)–The Healey administration has housing production on its mind as it attempts to breathe life into efforts to redevelop a pair of state office buildings in downtown Boston.

The Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance is beginning a new process for a residential and mixed-use redevelopment of the “superblock” that features the 347,000 square foot Charles F. Hurley Building and 222,000 square foot Erich Lindemann buildings.

Mass. home sales sink lower than depressed 2023 levels

“Given the Hurley – Lindemann site’s proximity to major hubs of Massachusetts industries, educational institutions, and government, it holds enormous redevelopment potential,” Secretary of Administration and Finance Matthew Gorzkowicz said in making the announcement Wednesday. “Our approach will deliver urgently needed housing and economic opportunities in the heart of our capital city.”

State officials said the redevelopment would lead to “upgraded, modern space for the residential mental health services currently provided by the Department of Mental Health in the Lindemann building.”

Construction of the Hurley-Lindemann site was completed in 1971 and DCAMM described it as “architecturally significant due to its unique mid-century design” and said the Healey administration “will prioritize historic preservation in the renewed redevelopment process.”

A DCAMM spokesperson said no documents beyond the press release announcing the effort were available. State officials plan to communicate with “local and regional and regional stakeholders and community members” before issuing a request for proposals.
