A Boston police officer was hit by a truck in the North End on Thursday, authorities said.

The officer was working a paid detail assisting a construction crew near North Washington and Thacher streets, Boston Police Deputy Superintendent Paul McLaughlin said. When the officer attempted to guide a construction vehicle across the street, the rear of the vehicle struck the officer.

McLaughlin said the officer, whose name has not yet been released, was transported to Mass. General Hospital. The officer has “serious injuries” that are not life-threatening, McLaughlin said.

The nature of the injuries is “really undetermined,” McLaughlin said. “There is still a lot going on down at the hospital. We don’t want to comment on the exact nature of the injuries.”

Police interviewed the vehicle operator, McLaughling said

“At this point, it is a very active investigation,” he said. “As far as charges, that is too preliminary to talk about. We need to pull the whole scene together, look at any video, talk to witnesses, and really be able to assess whether charges are warranted or not.”

Police temporarily shut down traffic in the area around the incident to investigate and collect evidence, but opened the streets up almost three hours later.
