Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck showed up at Bob Cousy’s home on Tuesday morning with a special surprise: the 2008 and 2024 NBA championship trophies.

“You’ve been instrumental in all the championships,” Grousbeck told Cousy, according to the Worcester Telegram.

Cousy, who spent 13 seasons playing for the Celtics, helped the team win their first six of now 18 championships, dating back to 1957, when he won the title of MVP. Grousbeck and Jeff Twiss, the Celtics’ vice president of media and alumni relations, presented the trophies as a way to honor Cousy’s contributions to the team’s success.

“I think it’s fantastic,” said Cousy, who told the Globe in mid-June that one of the last things he wants to see is the Celtics win their 18 championship banner. “It’s completely unexpected.”

The 95-year-old Hall-of-Famer played for much of the 50s and early 60s, an All-Star for the entirety of his career, before retiring in 1970. He then spent 35 years as a color commentator.

“He’s always been a team player,” said Grousbeck, thanking Cousy, who predicts that the Celtics “have the potential to create a mini-dynasty.”

Grousbeck also showed the Celtics legend a number of ring designs that would commemorate the championship, promising him a ring alongside the Celtics players before the next season.

A ceremony to hang up championship banner No. 18 will be held in the fall. Last month, Cousy said he will attend on the condition that he can share that moment with two good friends: Governor Maura Healey and former Celtics power forward Satch Sanders, the only remaining player from the 50s and 60s.
