Red Sox pitching coach shares his philosophy on pitching in 2024, opens up about life

One of the people who has gotten the most credit for the Boston Red Sox 's success early in their 2024 campaign has been pitching coach Andrew Bailey.

Bailey, who pitched in Boston from 2012-13, returned this offseason after the Red Sox hired Craig Breslow as their chief baseball officer.

The 40-year-old hasn't spoken much publicly since rejoining the Red Sox, but Boston's social team recently released an All-Access video on their YouTube channel where he discussed his life and out of baseball.

One of the most interesting portions of the video is Bailey discussing his philosophy for pitching in baseball today.

"You just look through the history of baseball, and spin pitches just play better, and off-speed pitches, limit damage," Bailey said. "We're looking at expected stats as well. We want to keep the ball in the yard as best as possible, and we want to limit damage and punch guys out. It's about a blend of a lot of different things and allowing the pitcher to move as naturally as possible, the way their anatomy is put together, working with the strength and conditioning department, mental side and medical side to get the best out of them every single day. There's a little bit of a science behind it. We just try to get the best out of players."

It's no secret that the Red Sox have thrown fewer fastballs in 2024, but it's nice to hear exactly why that is straight from him.
