Jayson Tatum has been in the headlines of late for not the best of reasons. Many were surprised when Team USA head coach Steve Kerr decided not to give the Boston Celtics star a chance to play in their Paris opener against Nikola Jokic and Serbia.

Tatum finally saw action in the following game versus South Sudan, but the controversy about his benching continues to linger. He added to the drama when he expressed his thoughts on what he considers a humbling experience while rattling off a few things from his resume.

Tatum’s comments didn’t sound like music to the ears of basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb. On his FOX Sports show, Gottlieb even called Tatum a “colossal pain in the a–” after the former Duke Blue Devils admitted his true feelings about the benching.

“He said, ‘Win a championship, new contract, cover of 2K, and then you sit the whole game, cover of Sports Illustrated, so it’s definitely humbling.’ I’m just gonna tell you right now like how it reads to me… Jayson Tatum seems like a colossal pain in the a–.”

This Tatum saga doesn’t feel like a distraction at the moment for Team USA. The Americans are coasting in Paris, as evidenced by their 110-84 win over Serbia and 103-86 victory against South Sudan.

And that kind of domination by Team USA is perhaps a big reason why people are talking about something as inconsequential as Tatum’s playing time instead.

At the end of the day, it’s the gold that matters for Tatum and company.
