Boston Red Sox Former First-Round Pick Breaking Out In High-A

Labeled Marcelo Mayer Lite after fans saw his mannerisms and mechanics coming out of high school, the Boston Red Sox's 2022 first-round draft selection has driven his prospect stock up heavily in recent weeks. Viewed as a forgotten prospect as recently as earlier this season because of his lengthy struggles and breakout performances by other prospects in the organization, infielder Mikey Romero is finally coming into his own.

After failing to sustain success in Low-A Salem, Romero was promoted to High-A Greenville for a change of scenery and the elevation has worked perfectly to this point. Looking at his entire 2024 season, he holds a slash line of .281/.324/.534 in 221 plate appearances throughout 50 games.

Drafted out of Orange Lutheran HS in California, Romero was initially profiled as an athletic bat-first middle infielder with an advanced approach and smooth swing. He has shown flashes and brief showings of a high-level prospect across two injury-riddled seasons but has turned a significant corner in his last 30 games.

Since the start of July, Romero has been outright annihilating opposing High-A pitchers. Across that 22-game and 106-PA stretch his batting average sits at .357 with eight home runs and 25 runs batted in.

His first piece of national recognition came earlier this morning, earning South Atlantic League Player of the Week after posting a ridiculous .480 AVG with three homers, two doubles, and 11 RBIs.

To make his recent performance even crazier, it's worth mentioning that he currently holds a six-game multi-hit streak to go along with eight such games since July 13th and three multi-HR games in the same timeline. Romero's biggest current issue is his overall speed but a continuation of present offensive trends would drown out any major concern in that category.
