DoorDash, known for providing food delivery and takeout, has taken a step in an additional direction, assisting faith-based groups and non-profits in providing meals for those impacted by poverty.

This past June, the delivery service announced that they had made more than 100 million charity meals via their Project DASH initiative focused on tackling problems of hunger and food waste in local communities. With home delivery in high demand during the height of the pandemic, DoorDash began partnering with religious organizations in order to distribute goods to soup kitchens, food pantries, and nursing facilities.

“In our efforts to empower local economies, we collaborate with faith leaders nationwide to expand access within local communities,” Darrell Davis, DoorDash’s senior manager for public engagement, told Religion News Service .

Project DASH has trailed cross country in order to meet the needs of those who need it most, from feeding the homeless in Chicago to making deliveries to Kosher Markets throughout New York City and distributing gift cards to churches throughout the city of Boston. “Community Credits,” DoorDash’s term for their gift card and giveaways through financial support initiatives, have been in place since 2021 as a means to bridge the gap and create connections within underprivileged areas.

Pastor Cornelius Parks of Good Hope Free Will Baptist Church in Chicago was able to feed those dealing with poverty in his church community, as well as those throughout his neighborhood with the help of DoorDash’s delivery and community credits. “If it wasn’t for DoorDash really partnering with us, a lot of things that we desire to do for the community probably wouldn’t come to pass because we’re limited on resources,” Pastor Parks said.

As the delivery service continues to partner with both faith-based and secular organizations in order to serve the local communities in need, they are also working to connect with regional denominations.
