'People Don't Understand!' Shedeur Sanders Shares Controversial Take

    2024-02-11

Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders won’t be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. He decided to return to school for his final season, fine-tuning his draft stock and playing an additional season under his father, head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

Growing up in the shadow of a Hall of Famer certainly has its perks, but it has also forged a path with a brand of adversity his collegiate counterparts can’t identify with.

Sanders compared himself to the quarterbacks from this year’s class, crediting his journey as a reason why he’s better than all of them.

“I’m biased, but I don’t see a quarterback that’s better than me,” Sanders said . “I don’t see a QB that went through as much adversity as me, that had four different offensive coordinators in four years. Coming from an HBCU, coming to a Power Five, having real pressure on me.”

Sanders’ statistical profile has some exciting aspects to it. He threw just three interceptions and posted the fifth-best turnover-worthy play rate among qualified college passers. Only six quarterbacks graded out better on passes, per Pro Football Focus’ grading.

However, in a class with two Heisman winners – USC’s Caleb Williams and LSU’s Jayden Daniels – along with two other 2023 finalists – Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. – Sanders failed to separate himself. Top quarterback prospect Drake Maye and national champion J.J. McCarthy only added to the names Sanders would have to jump if he declared.

Instead, he’ll look to improve upon his game and become the top passer in the 2025 NFL Draft.

There are issues in his game, a lack of aggression and a habit of taking sacks aren’t his only flaws, but some intrigue remains. To his credit, he’s performed well, despite the constant transitions and attention thrown in his path.

“A lot of people don’t understand, that’s a lot more adversity than you think, just even being the son of Deion Sanders,” he said. “You put any of those guys in [my] situation, they’re not doing that.”

Some fans weren’t happy with Sanders’ comments due to the resources and advantages that he’s had that others didn’t and the decline in his play as the season went on. After shocking TCU and jumping out to a 3-0 start, they finished the season 4-8.

Justified or not, Sanders will have another season left to address the concerns in his profile and put the finishing touches on his college career. In a class that’s projected to be weak, we could very well hear another confident claim from the Colorado quarterback.
