DENVER ( KDVR ) — Boulder police said a truck’s stick shift worked as theft prevention after a woman attempted to steal the vehicle but was unable to operate the manual transmission.

The carjacking didn’t require much effort, as officers said the keys were sitting in the car. The woman hopped in and drove away, which she did successfully until she realized the truck was a manual.

The Boulder Police Department posted on X about the failed attempt on Monday.

According to the tweet, it all started after a woman was released from jail after, you guessed it, stealing a car the day before.

The woman walked half a mile from jail and spotted the truck on Airport Boulevard, Boulder police said.

After the woman got in the car, she was unable to drive the manual transmission and tried to leave on foot, causing the truck to crash into a fire hydrant.

Officers responded, spoke to witnesses and took the woman into custody.

She was arrested on charges of second-degree motor vehicle theft/enhanced circumstance, careless driving, driving without a valid license and duty upon striking an unattended vehicle or other property.

No one was hurt and the vehicle was brought back to its owner.
