State Rep. Junie Joseph will be the Democratic nominee in the Boulder-centric House District 10 after defeating Tina Mueh in Tuesday’s primary election, according to the early results reported by the Colorado secretary of state.

Joseph won with 57% of the vote, according to results as of 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Associated Press-subscribed outlets reported that the AP called the race for Joseph.

Joseph, a former Boulder City Council member, was first elected to the seat in 2022. Earlier that year, she was selected by a vacancy committee to the Democratic nomination after former Rep. Edie Hooton withdrew from the race. During her two years in office, she ran bills regulating artificial intelligence in political campaign communications and creating a grant for hardening homes against wildfires.

This election cycle, she had support from several prominent Democrats, including Gov. Jared Polis, Attorney General Phil Weiser, House Speaker Julie McCluskie and Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett. She was also endorsed by the Colorado Working Families Party, AFL-CIO and YIMBY Denver.

Mueh also competed for the party’s nomination in the 2022 vacancy committee. She is a retired middle school teacher and former president of the Boulder Valley Education Association. She also served as a board member for the Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains and as a trustee for the state’s Public Employees’ Retirement Association.

She was endorsed by Hooton, BVEA and the Colorado Education Association.

Joseph will face Republican William DeOreo, who ran unopposed in that party’s primary, in November. The district is one of the strongest Democratic seats in the state, favoring Democrats by 74 percentage points according to recent election results.
