SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Three people were killed last week in a multi-vehicle crash in the Mountain Empire area, said California Highway Patrol.

The collision happened around 1 a.m. Friday, June 28, when a 45-year-old woman, a Boulevard resident, was driving a 2015 Toyota Camry eastbound on Old Highway 80, west of Tierra Del Sol. At that same time, CHP said a 65-year-old woman, also from Boulevard, was driving a 1995 Ford F-150 westbound.

For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Toyota reportedly drove to the left, across the solid double yellow lines, and crossed into the westbound lane. CHP said this caused the Toyota to crash into the Ford, which was also carrying two passengers.

The Toyota came to a stop, blocking the eastbound lane of Old Highway 80 with no lights on. According to authorities, the woman exited the vehicle and was standing in the eastbound lane when a 58-year-old Boulevard man approached in a 2000 Honda CR-V. Not seeing the woman or vehicle, the man crashed into both, CHP said.

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries. A 70-year-old passenger in the Ford also died at the hospital.

A 62-year-old man, another passenger in the Ford, sustained major injuries, and the driver of the Honda was reported to have suffered non-life threatening injuries from the crash.

According to CHP, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in this fatal incident; however, and investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is encouraged to call
