Coffee wars? Starbucks opens 2nd shop in Bourne. Dunkin' has plans too

BOURNE — There are dollar signs in those java beans as Starbucks opens its second coffee shop in town, in the shadow of the Sagamore Bridge , while a new Dunkin’ takes shape off Route 28 southbound at Pocasset.

Seattle-based Starbucks Corporation with its global brand is now selling coffee in a new shop and drive-thru next to the old Friendly's restaurant , north of the Cape Cod Canal . The other Starbucks store is near the Bourne Bridge , also north of the canal.

The new store opened March 29.

“Business is brisk between 7 and 11 in the morning,” store manager Matthew Plante said Monday morning.

The new Starbucks operates a few hundred yards from a Mary Lou’s coffee shop and a Dunkin’. All are close to the Bourne Park and Ride at 2 Canal St. in Sagamore Beach .

“As we think more about product innovation, our opportunity in coffee remains a real advantage; it is our core strength, and we are investing to ensure we sustain our distinctiveness and ensure its future,” Chief Executive Officer Laxman Narasimhan told Starbucks shareholders in March.

He said the company is “making large investments in our partners and stores, along with a strategy for re-invention.”

There are 14 coffee shops in Bourne, eight north of the canal and six south of the waterway.

Dunkin’, meanwhile, is constructing its latest high-visibility shop at Forest Park Drive , in a new commercial subdivision along Route 28 between the Bourne Bridge and the rotary at Joint Base Cape Cod.

Dunkin’ plans to close its store at Clay Pond Road and Route 28, and move operations to the new shop down the road.
