BOWIE, Md. ( DC News Now ) — After seeing a rise in armed robberies across the city, the Bowie Police Department (BPD) warned residents to use caution when going to the bank or ATM.

The BPD said “jugging” is a term that is applied when people take cash from the bank or ATM. The suspect then follows the person to their next location and steals the money. In a post on the X platform, the department shared a list to help residents stay safe.

Police are encouraging community members to:

    • Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to anyone observing activities outside a bank or financial institution
    • Conceal Cash: Discreetly carry your crash, in a purse or wallet
    • Vary your routine: Change your habits regarding banking or cash withdrawals
    • Secure your automobile: Make sure your vehicle is locked, windows are closed, and all valuables are out of sight.

The BPD also recommends residents report all suspicious activity by calling the non-emergency number 240-544-5700. For any crimes that are in progress, call 911.
