BOWLING GREEN — Habitat for Humanity of Wood County is opening a ReStore, which the executive director describes as a cross between a Goodwill and a Home Depot. Mark Ohashi said the ReStore will offer at thrift-store prices household items and building materials that are donated from community members. “We get donated product from the community, from local businesses — furniture, appliances, building materials — and then sell it to the public at reduced prices,” Mr. Ohashi said. The location will be at the former Bee Gee Rental & Sales Inc. store at 829 W. Newton Rd., which closed in December, 2022.

Mosquito pool in Wood County tests positive for West Nile virus
BOWLING GREEN — A mosquito pool collected in Wood County has tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Wood County Health Department. The sample of mosquitoes was collected July 12 and sent for testing to the Ohio Department of Health. The positive test results were provided Wednesday. The county contracts with Bowling Green State University through the Ohio EPA Mosquito Control Grant to conduct mosquito surveillance throughout the county, and samples are regularly sent to ODH for testing. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to humans and other animals when they bite. No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Wood County or Ohio this year.

Indiana framing contractor cited by OSHA for violations in Perrysburg
An Indiana framing contractor working on projects in Perrysburg faces nearly $200,000 in fines after federal workplace safety inspectors found the company exposing its employees to deadly risks of falls twice in less than two weeks in May, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday. The company, MDM & Sons Construction LLC, faces $199,761 in proposed penalties. It was cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for similar violations in 2021, officials said. “MDM & Sons Construction continues its dangerous pattern of exposing its employees to the risk of serious injuries and death related to falls from elevation, the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry,” said Todd Jensen, OSHA Area Director in Toledo. “Federal law requires employers to provide and ensure the use of proper fall protection whenever people work at heights six feet or greater,” Mr. Jensen said. “If MDM & Sons Construction continues to ignore its legal responsibility to protect its workers’ safety, it may only be a matter of time before disaster strikes and an employee’s life is forever changed or ended. The company must act now.”

Craig Bridge gates fixed, but electrical problem persists, ODOT says
Its safety gates repaired, the Craig Memorial Bridge remained closed to traffic indefinitely Thursday while a state contractor tried to ferret out an electrical gremlin that was the initial reason for its closing more than two weeks earlier. Something is amiss within sets of electrical sensors that ensure the bridge operates properly when its drawspans are raised or lowered for Maumee River vessel traffic, the Ohio Department of Transportation explained. “This goes back to the original problem that closed the bridge on July 9,” Kyle Ruedel, the ODOT project engineer, said in a prepared statement. “There are numerous sensors that must be examined to identify the impacted sensor, and we have checked roughly 25 percent of the sensors at this time.” Troubleshooting by ODOT and contractor personnel began with the detection of communication errors after a ship passed through the bridge. The “fully closed” indication did not reach the control station, preventing the safety gates from rising to allow traffic — a status that cannot be overridden, ODOT said.
