After 55 years as LA County + USC, the county’s busiest medical facility has a new name. As of Wednesday, the Boyle Heights hospital is officially the Los Angeles General Medical Center. Arrest made in connection with motorcycle hit-and-run
The LAPD Central Traffic Division announced an arrest Tuesday afternoon associated with last month’s motorcycle hit-and-run in Boyle Heights. In an Instagram post, the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic division said a suspect in the collision that severely injured a 13-year-old boy had been taken into custody by police in Banning – a Riverside County city more than 80 miles East of Boyle Heights.
The effect of forced sterilizations at County Hospital, still felt today
In the Eastside of Los Angeles in the late 1960’s and 70’s, more than 200 women of color were forcibly sterilized after giving birth at the LAC + USC Medical Center. These women, many of them Spanish speakers, were forced to sign English-language documents, unknowingly agreeing to having a tubal ligation performed on them. This was evidently done in an attempt to restrict and reduce the population of races that were seen as inferior and “less intelligent”.

A protest to demand a safer crosswalk will be held Saturday at the site of the hit-and-run accident last month that severely injure a Boyle Heights teen. On March 30th, 13-year-old Joshua Mora was using a crosswalk at the intersection of Whittier Blvd. and Orme Ave. when a motorcyclist struck him, severed his right leg, and fled without offering assistance.

The campaign to recall councilmember Kevin de León has failed to collect the signatures needed to proceed, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. Pauline Adkins, the Eagle Rock resident who spearheaded the recall, told the paper Thursday that she did not plan to submit any signatures by the March 31 deadline, and that she would not refile a new intent to recall De León.

BHB: Tell me a little bit about how Boyle Heights looked when you were growing up?. Isabel Morales: I’m talking to you from Mendez High School. This high school did not exist. When I was growing up [in the 90s], this was housing projects, one of my closest friends grew up here. There was a lot of fear of gun violence, but it was different. It was gang related gun violence, like drive bys and stuff. I’ve seen data where the amount of fear that parents had related to gun violence in the 90s, is similar to what it is now. But in terms of the source of the gun violence, that’s a little different. Now people are a little bit more scared about mass shootings, that really wasn’t a fear we had when I was growing up. We did grow up with more gang related violence.
