An icon in the neighborhood, a season for culture
Boyle Heights has so many amazing staples that I’ve grown to love over the years. It’s a special place that I hold dearly to my heart that I really began to explore more during my time at the Beat. One place that I’ve been going to for years is Casa 0101. A local theater founded by Real Women Have Curves author Josefina Lopez in 2000, this playhouse has always done a great job of bringing unique art and live theater programs to the neighborhood for over two decades now.
Celebrated Boyle Heights music shop to shutter this weekend
La Casa del Músico, a Boyle Heights music equipment store that has been in the neighborhood since 1978, is closing its doors at 1900 1st Street for good. Co-owner Noel Jaramillo-Venegas, 43, said the store a block east of Mariachi Plaza will close as early as Saturday, Oct. 7, and no later than Monday, Oct. 9, depending on what stock he and his wife Joanna have left in their storefront by the weekend.

The Los Angeles Police Department has yet to address its officers’ altercation with demonstrators at a tenant-led protest that marched through Boyle Heights Sunday. Several protesters were injured and three were taken to the hospital according to a Union de Vecinos press release. One LAPD officer is reported to have also sustained injuries, the extent of which remains unknown.
Avian influenza scare at Hollenbeck Park, another culprit likely to blame for duck death
After a few weeks of mystery surrounding the deaths of seven ducks at Hollenbeck Park, officials are ruling out avian flu from the equation. Signage posted by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the Hollenbeck Recreation Center suggested that the waterfowl were sick with avian flu, but testing done by the county’s Veterinary Public Health program resulted in a negative test for influenza.

The suspects were caught on camera using power tools to open the security gate of the 7 Mares parking lot where their office building is located next to the restaurant. ‘Queen of the Rumba’ to world premiere at Casa 0101
In the 1930’s, a young Cuban woman named Alicia Parlá gained international fame dancing a style of music she called rumba (but was actually closer to the Cuban son). She performed it, first in New York and then Europe, even taught it to the likes of the Prince of Wales and Josephine Baker, and for a brief period reigned as the international Queen of the Rumba – all before turning 21.
