A new Home Depot is in the works for Lakewood Ranch.

The home improvement retail giant recently filed a request with Manatee County Development Services to rezone land from general agricultural to planned development commercial.

The request comes with a preliminary site plan at 5504 Lorraine Road, near the corner of Rangeland Parkway north of State Road 70 E. The Home Depot is asking for 15.86 acres to be rezoned, records say.

Co-founders Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank opened the first two The Home Depot stores in 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia, according to company history. The retailer has more than 2,300 stores in North America, including three existing stores in Manatee County.

Blank owns the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC in MLS.

The planned store marks the first one along State Road 70. The other Manatee County Home Depot stores are at 2350 Cortez Road W., 5820 State Road 64 E. and 5475 University Parkway.

The Home Depot is headquartered in Atlanta.
