Sage Run To Host Island Resort Intercollegiate Golf Tournament
HARRIS, MI – Top NCAA Men’s Golf teams will converge at Sage Run Golf Course this Labor Day weekend for the fifth annual Island Resort Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. The award-winning golf course in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will be hosting a collection of top collegiate players and teams from around Michigan and the U.S., September 1-2. The public is welcome to watch the tournament and admission is free.

Local school meal program is successful and expanding
ESCANABA — Last year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer enacted the Michigan School Meals Program to provide all public school students from kindergarten through 12th grade both breakfast and lunch for free every day of the school year, if the schools opt in. Now entering the second year of the program, which has been successful and seen a rise in the number of kids eating during the day, some local schools are even expanding offers.

BARK RIVER — Terry M. Otradovec, 82, of Bark River, passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Pinecrest Medical Facility in Powers, Mich. Terry was born on March 29, 1942, in Wilson, Mich., son of Matthew and Irene (Arkens) Otradovec. He graduated from Bark River High School, class of 1960.

Jasenovsky earns Player of the Week honors
ESCANABA – The Bay College Norse Volleyball Team (0-4) opened their season with a challenging schedule on the road. Jade Jasenovsky’s play over four matches was recognized as she was awarded the MCCAA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of August 19-25. Jasenovsky (FR, Menominee, Mich.) wore the libero jersey for the Norse in all four matches. Against Lake Land College in the season opener, Jade had nine digs and one assisted block. After adding a pair of digs and an assisted block against Carl Sandburg, she bounced back with a 19 dig, two assisted block effort against McHenry County College. In the weekend finale Jasenovsky added another 19 digs in a match against South Suburban College.

POWERS — Gerald “Jerry” M. Nowack, 78, of Powers, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at Marshfield Medical Center – Dickinson. He was born on October 28, 1945 in Spalding, son of the late Frank and Amy (Fezatte) Nowack. On July 27,1974, he married the love of his life, Jeanette Leboeuf at St Francis Xavier Church in Spalding and together they celebrated their 50th anniversary this year.
