St. Johnsbury counting on experience
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (WCAX) - St. Johnsbury has become one of the best programs in the state over the last decade, qualifying for the D1 playoffs each of the past ten seasons, with three trips to Rutland for the final and their first ever D1 title in 2017. The Toppers have fallen back a bit from those lofty heights in recent years: they’ve lost three regular season games each of the past three seasons and haven’t won a playoff game since the 2019 semis. But with a big group of last year’s sophomore contributors becoming upperclassmen, and the new championship saturday rotation bringing the finals up to Fairbanks this November...St. J is hoping to regain their lofty perch. “Last year, that was new to me,” said senior Carter Bunnell of the starting quarterback job. “It was new to a lot of the wide receivers then too. But this year it’s a lot of returners. So I definitely think we will be off in more of a groove when we get the season going instead of taking a couple games to get going.” “Yeah, we have a good bunch of kids,” added head coach Rich Alercio. “We’re working really hard, pretty athletic group. We’ve got the returning quarterback who’s extremely athletic. Most of the other ball handlers are all juniors. They have some experience because we played so many sophomores last year. But all in all, it’s a good group. And the offensive line is developing.” “I think we can go all the way,” said junior tight end Davis Palmieri. “I mean, we’re hosting at home. I don’t wanna watch it from the in the stands. I wanna play in it. And I think if we just prepare and everyone helps, whether you’re a starter or as a scout team member, give good looks and practice. I think we can do it.” St. J opens its season Friday night as they host Essex.

In fact, it’s a marginal risk for those severe storms today.
WRECKERS: THE WATERFRONT DIVING CENTER GOES DEEP
A wetsuit-clad mannequin has stood on the corner of Maple and Battery Streets for decades, marking the spot of Burlington's Waterfront Diving Center. Located at the corner of Battery and Maple since 1991—three years after first opening one block north—the Diving Center is a hub of aquatic activity that for nearly 40 years has been inviting locals and visitors into a deeper relationship with Lake Champlain.
