Public report prevents disaster after abandoned campfire sparks blaze in Colorado

A timely report from a member of the public helped prevent a wildfire from spreading in Summit County over the weekend. Sadly, the blaze was totally preventable – started by an abandoned campfire.

According to the US Forest Service, the campfire, dubbed the Wellington Fire, was located east of Breckenridge, reported a little bit before 1 p.m. on June 7. Thanks to a quick response, it only grew to about 1/4 of an acre, but it could have been much worse.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office noted that an important factor in the rapid response was a report received from a mountain biker in the area. At that point, officials were able to determine the source of large amounts of smoke in the area and establish an evacuation plan for a nearby residential area if needed.

At last report, an investigation was underway to identify a suspect that may have left the campfire behind.

This case goes to show how important it is to properly douse a campfire until debris is cool to the touch – remember, an abandoned campfire was also blamed for starting the now-contained 700-plus acre Interlaken Fire earlier this year. Even if a fire appears to be out, wind can reignite a blaze and spread hot ash. A lack of smoke isn't enough to assume a blaze is not a risk.

To properly douse a fire, pour water onto the coals and stir the water into the ash. Repeat this until the burn area is cool to the touch.

This instance also goes to show how important it is for outdoor recreators to report suspicious or hazardous happenings on the trail.
