InterBank achieves 100 percent employee participation with United Fund donations
One hundred percent of the employees at Breckenridge’s InterBank donated to this year’s United Fund campaign, helping the charity that helps local organizations. On Tuesday afternoon, the bank’s employees gathered for a celebratory photo, and Luke Grider, community bank president, thanked the employees, as well as the United Fund of Breckenridge’s board of directors.
East Elementary to host Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 23
Breckenridge’s East Elementary will host an Easter Egg Hunt for community children ages 3 to 9 on Saturday, March 23, at the school’s playground, 1310 E. Elm St. The event will kick off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and will include the Easter Egg Hunt and pictures with the Easter Bunny.

As seasonal demand increases, gas prices start to rise
Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 14.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.04/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 15.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 2.8 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 2.2 cents in the last week and stands at $4.00 per gallon.
Fundraisers to benefit family whose house was destroyed in fire last week
Several fundraisers have been set up to benefit a Breckenridge family whose house was destroyed in a fire last Monday, March 11. According to a post on the Breckenridge Fire Department’s Facebook page, firefighters responded to a structure fire call at the 1400 block of East Hullum Street shortly after 1 a.m. on March 11. The family made it out of the home, but the home was a total loss. Additionally, the Breckenridge Police Department and Sacred Cross EMS assisted at the scene.

Leotta Martin, age 90, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Per her wishes, cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary. Doris Leotta Hankins was born January 6, 1934, in Cisco, Texas, to JY Hankins and Maude May Chapman. She graduated from Breckenridge High School and was a member of the class of 1952. After graduation, she attended the University of Houston for two years. Leotta worked as a secretary and in 1990 moved to Breckenridge. Once she moved to Breckenridge, she began working at Stephens Memorial Hospital. She worked various positions over the many years she worked there, including office manager. Leotta was a member at the First Presbyterian Church and of The Woman’s Forum. She was very active in her church and the community. For 25 years, she served as the Meals on Wheels treasurer. In her spare time, she loved playing bridge and doing embroidery and crossword puzzles.

Donald Brant Crenshaw III
Donald Brant Crenshaw III left this world on October 22, 2023. Born August 1, 1954, at Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, he was the first child of Donald Crenshaw Jr. and Maerita (Waldrop) Crenshaw, high school sweethearts from Breckenridge, Texas. Donnie, as he was known to family and many friends, lived in San Antonio, Breckenridge, Eliasville, Okemah, Oklahoma and Italy during his youth. The experience of being in these various places helped to create a man who was always curious, questioning and open minded, who rooted for the underdog and acted with exacting ethical standards.
Buckaroo powerlifting boys qualify for state meet; state send-off for girls set for Wednesday
Three Breckenridge High School boys will compete in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state meet on Friday, March 22, in Abilene. At the Region 6 Division 3 meet on Friday, March 8, the Buckaroos Powerlifting Team competed at Decatur High School, placing eighth as a team out of 23 teams. At the regional meet, 14 Buckaroos competed — the most of any school in the region — earning three medals and setting multiple personal records.
Following an often-tense public hearing, Commissioners Court votes 4-1 to give tax abatements to wind farm project
In a split vote this afternoon, the Stephens County Commissioners Court voted 4 to 1 to approve an agreement that will dramatically change the landscape and skyline of the southeastern portion of the county for years to come with the installation of dozens of wind turbines. Precinct 1 Commissioner David Fambro — the commissioner who represents the residents who will be directly affected by the wind farm — was the only “no” vote.
