New year starts off with slight drop in gas, diesel prices
Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 1.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.63/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 8.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 20.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 4.5 cents in the last week and stands at $3.96 per gallon.
2024 Stephens County Junior Livestock Show to kickoff Thursday, Jan. 4, at county ag center
The 66th annual Stephens County Junior Livestock Show will officially start Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Stephens County Ag Center on U.S. Highway 180, east of Breckenridge, with the weigh-ins of the rabbits, goats, sheep, swine and poultry, and will continue through the sale Saturday afternoon, Jan. 6. Thursday’s events also will include the check-in of the ag mechanics projects and the rabbit judging.

National average price of gas projected to see decline in 2024 for second straight year, according to GasBuddy’s annual report
Last week, GasBuddy released its annual Fuel Price Outlook with some good news for drivers: expect lower gasoline and diesel prices in 2024. The outlook highlights key trends in gasoline and diesel prices, forecasting that, after two years of above average gas prices, 2024 will bring relief at the pump for consumers as several factors contribute to less of a pinch at the pump. GasBuddy expects the yearly national average will drop from $3.51 per gallon this year to $3.38 in 2024.

Ouida Garner
Ouida Wright Garner was born in Gorman, Texas, on April 5, 1947, and passed away in Arlington, Texas, at the age of 76, on December 25, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Her parents were John Amos Wright and Ouida R’Minta Davis Wright. Ouida lived in Breckenridge until age five when her family moved to Abilene, Texas. Ouida attended Cooper High School and then received her degree in Education from Abilene Christian College in 1969. That same year, she began her teaching career at Bailey Junior High in Arlington, Texas, a position that would last for forty years. In 1984, Ouida completed her Master of Education degree at North Texas State University.
Officials plan to reopen bridge before school starts with temporary repair
The Texas Department of Transportation plans to open the Hubbard Creek Lake bridge before Breckenridge schools reopen on Jan. 7, according to Stephens County Judge Michael Roach, who gave an update on the situation shortly before 5 this afternoon. The bridge on U.S. Highway 180 West was closed on Friday, Dec. 22, following an emergency inspection.

On Monday, December 25, 2023, God put his arms around June Marie Wood and called her home. She was surrounded by her family, who loved her dearly. June “Nanny” Wood, 70, was born in Natoma, Kansas, on June 30, 1953. She is survived by her loving companion, John Henry Wood; her three children, Stacy Dawn Krohmer and husband Jason of Bastrop, Texas, Mick Lovell and wife Melissa of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Misty Brown and husband Stephen of Fernandina Beach, Florida; grandchildren, Alissa Michelle Brown of Houston, Texas, Bailie Mykal Brown of Fernandina Beach, and Finn Henry Lovell of Woodland Park.

The main route to and from Breckenridge on the west side of the county — the U.S. Highway 180 bridge over Hubbard Creek Reservoir, aka the “Mile-Long Bridge” — was shut down by the Texas Department of Transportation Friday evening, Dec. 22, due to damage to the bridge. The bridge will require repairs before it can be reopened, but a timeline for that reopening has not been determined by TxDOT at this time, according to a news release from the state agency.
