Abbi Duran wins first Breck’s Got Talent competition
This year’s Stephens County Frontier Days featured the debut of Breck’s Got Talent, and Breckenridge High School sophomore Abbi Duran took home the top prize. Duran played the guitar and sang “Something in Orange” for her entry in the competition that replaced the previous talent contest, “Breckenridge Idol.” She also accompanied contestant Preslie Malcuit on the keyboard as Malcuit sang “Never Enough.” Malcuit came in second in the talent competition. Duran, who is the drum captain of the BHS drum line, also led the drum line in a performance to entertain the crowd as the Breck’s Got Talent judges’ votes were tallied.
Maggie Wunsch’s Eagle Scout project adds new tables to outside dining area at BHS/BJHS
When it came time for Breckenridge eighth grader Maggie Wunsch to pick an Eagle Scout project to work on, she saw a need at her school and went to work to fix the problem. She planned out the project and raised the money to purchase and install two new tables for the outside dining area at Breckenridge High School/Junior High School. In completing the project, she will become the first girl in Breckenridge to become an Eagle Scout.
Hamilton, Akers win Breckenridge City Commission race
When the polls closed at 7 p.m. tonight, May 4, in the Breckenridge City Commission election, one incumbent and one challenger came out ahead. Blake Hamilton and Greg Akers were elected to Place 1 and Place 2, respectively. Additionally, Mayor Bob Sims, who ran unopposed, was re-elected and the local sales and use tax was reauthorized.
It’s a busy weekend: Frontier Days, Ranch Rodeo, baseball games and Music Fest
From Frontier Days and the Ranch Rodeo to baseball games and concerts, this weekend offers a variety of activities for the Breckenridge community. Frontier Days is going on in the Breckenridge City Park today and Saturday, May 3-4, and includes the annual chuckwagon cookoff, Miss Breckenridge Pageant, Breck’s Got Talent competition and more. Seasonal rise in gas prices appears to be over, according to petroleum analyst
Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 5.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.19/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 7.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 5.8 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 2.9 cents in the last week and stands at $3.98 per gallon.

East Elementary hosts art show to display students’ work
Parents, grandparents, siblings and others joined Breckenridge’s East Elementary students on Wednesday, April 17, for Art Gallery Night at the school. The guests strolled the halls of East Elementary, viewing the students’ artwork, which lined the walls. Most of the art was two-dimensional — drawings, watercolor paintings, etc. — but there were a few three-dimensional pieces, including paper sculptures inspired by artist Charles McGee.
