Texas gas prices drop slightly, in contrast to national rates
Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 1.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.89/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 11.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 17.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 1.3 cents in the last week and stands at $4.02 per gallon.
Jarrod Morris entertains enthusiastic crowd at Breckenridge’s National Theatre
Singer/songwriter Jarrod Morris brought his band and his self-described “goofball” personality to Breckenridge’s National Theatre stage on Friday, March 8. Morris’ playlist included many of the songs he’s written himself, including “West of East,” “One Pack a Day,” “If You Ever Wonder Why,” “Truth Like a Lie” and the newly released “Cowboi Nitemare.” He also included some covers, including Billy Idol’s “White Wedding,” Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider,” which Morris blended with some of his own lyrics from “I Didn’t Think About Rain.”

Brenda Joyce Ball “The General,” 76, of Breckenridge died on March 8, 2024, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law in Keller, Texas. The daughter of Gladys and Walter J Reynolds, Brenda was born in Breckenridge, Texas, on December 7, 1947. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1966. Brenda’s passion was serving people, first in the restaurant industry at the Dairy Delight, Dairy Mart, and Chaparral, and later in the dental profession for almost 50 years. For the last 6 years, she continued serving her community by working as a contract rural carrier delivering the mail to customers in Stephens and Young Counties.

Betty Browning, age 91, of Breckenridge, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2024. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in the Hilltop Memorial Cemetery in Carrollton. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Michael Russell officiating. Services have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary.

The national average price of diesel has fallen 2.7 cents in the last week and stands at $4.03 per gallon.
Stephens County Extension agents present annual report, upcoming plans to County Commissioners
The Stephens County AgriLife Extension office has a busy spring planned with activities ranging from a program on exercise for healthy aging to a car seat safety day. Breckenridge Woman’s Forum learns about Frontier Texas, importance of family histories
The Breckenridge Woman’s Forum met last week and learned about Frontier Texas in Abilene, as well as about the significance of family history. The program was presented by Whitney Herrington, marketing and development director at Frontier Texas in Abilene. Herrington talked about Frontier Texas and told a personal story about the importance that history and heritage plays in a person’s life. She brought a book that her grandmother created for her dad before Herrington was born and shared excerpts from it that connected their history.

Early Voting turnout slow in Primary Election; sample ballots available on Breckenridge Texan
Local turnout has been slow in Early Voting in the 2024 Primary Election, according to local election officials. Through the Tuesday of the second week of Early Voting, this year’s voter turnout is less than half of the turnout in the 2022 Primary elections, according to Christie Latham, Stephens County Elections Administrator. At the same point in Early Voting in 2022, there had been 1,062 votes cast; this year, by the end of voting on Tuesday, Feb. 27, there had been 512 votes.

Letter to the Editor: Voucher Lobby Lies
Voters in Parker, Palo Pinto, and Stephens counties know that Representative Glenn Rogers is the most conservative advocate for local public schools in the Texas House. His support for our public schools and the children that attend them, their parents, and the educators called to serve in our schools is unwavering. I know that my fellow citizens support our schools, too. There can be no more apparent contrast between Representative Rogers and his opponent than support for public education.
City Commission votes to continue with separate police, sheriff departments
The police department and sheriff’s office will continue operating as separate entities in Breckenridge and Stephens County after a public hearing last week ended in a unanimous vote by the City Commissioners to go on maintaining their own law enforcement agency and to proceed with a search for a new police chief.
