Breckenridge honors its fallen veterans with flags, service
“As long as two comrades survive, the VFW will render tribute to our heroic dead” — engraving on the Stephens County Veterans Memorial. The Breckenridge community honored its fallen military veterans with U.S. flags throughout the city and the annual Memorial Day Service, hosted by VFW Post 7767, at the Stephens County Veterans Memorial in downtown.

Delia Pauline Pendleton, 99, of Breckenridge, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 24, 2024, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Melton Kitchens Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Samantha Chambers officiating. Interment to follow at the Moon Cemetery under the direction of Melton Kitchens Funeral Home.
Breckenridge Airshow continues today, Sunday, May 26
The 2024 Breckenridge Airshow continues today, Sunday, May 26, at the Stephens County Airport, located at, 622 County Road 150, south of Breckenridge, off of U.S. Highway 183. Activities will be going on until about 4 p.m. There are a variety of vendors, including food trucks, and a small World War II-style field camp set up by a group of re-enactors, including the USAAF of WW2 Reenactors.

From aerobatics to pyrotechnics, Breckenridge Airshow returns this weekend, May 25-26
This coming weekend, the skies over the Stephens County Airport will be filled with vintage aircraft for the 2024 Breckenridge Airshow, the first airshow here since 2018. Rhonda Rogers Crawford, director of the Breckenridge Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that one of the big changes between this year’s airshow and those of the past is that this year both Saturday and Sunday will feature the same show, including the pyrotechnics. In the past, Saturday was often considered a practice day for many of the planes. But, no matter which day you attend this year, you’ll get the full show, Crawford said.

Memorial Day ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, May 27
The annual VFW Memorial Day Ceremony will take place on the Stephens County Courthouse lawn, 200 W. Walker St., at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27. The VFW Post 7767 and its auxiliary host the event each Memorial Day to honor the deceased veterans from the community. The names of the veterans who died in the past year have been added to the memorial and will be read aloud during the ceremony.
Petroleum analyst predicts gas prices will continue to trend lower
Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 5.4 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.09/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 16.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 5.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 3.3 cents in the last week and stands at $3.86 per gallon.
‘Mind Matters’ event brings together community members for a discussion on breaking the mental health stigma

Volunteers needed morning of Saturday, May 25, to help place flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day
Volunteers are needed next Saturday, May 25, to help place American flags on the graves of U.S. Military veterans buried in the Breckenridge Cemetery. Retired U.S. Navy veteran Jim Merson and Les Strickland, the Stephens County Veterans Service Officer and a retired U.S. Marine, will be at the cemetery at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 25, to put out the flags for the Memorial Day weekend. Merson has been heading up the project for more than 10 years, and through the years, Strickland and his wife, Sherry, have often showed up as volunteers.
