File photo By Mike Williams news@breckenridgeamerican.com As Breckenridge ISD ends classes for summer break, the Breckenridge Library is doing its part to encourage area children to open a book and read. The 2024 Summer Reading program began this week and will continue weekly through July 16.Beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, children going into grades three and below are invited to the library and hear stories read by community volunteers.  Following the story, there will be an activity for participants relating to the story read.As in the past, Library Director Heather Schkade has brought in a pair of programs to encourage more participation. New this year will be the Magic in the Library magic show with Bronson Chadwick.The magic show will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12 at the library. Chadwick is a full-time professional magician based out of Midland, he started his Magic in the Library program in 2023 and tours schools and libraries across the country. For more information on the Magic in the Library magic show, visit magicinthelibrary.org A popular attraction from previous years will make a return Thursday, June 20 with The Creature Teacher. Two shows are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. inside the large gallery at the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center. Originally based out of the Dallas/Fort Worth area, The Creature Teacher provides live animal programs at schools, scouting events, birthdays, libraries and other events across the state.The all-ages event teachers attendees about various animals that can be found around the world with an opportunity to pet the animals following the performance. The library series of performances by The Creature Teacher is an attempt to keep kids coming to the library and avoid the “summer slide” where reading scores typically decline due to the lack of reading during summer break. For more information on The Creature Teacher, visit thecreatureteacher.org The Breckenridge Library is open from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  The library is closed Friday through Sunday.
