City commissioners approved the installation of a second volleyball court and a cover over the swing set at the park. During Tuesday, July 2 meeting, city commissioners voted to spend up to $43,000 on the two improvements at the park. This will be paid out of the 2023 Certificate of Obligation funds. A lighted sand volleyball court opened at the park last month as part of an improvement plan implemented in 2023. Community members have taken full advantage of the added amenity at the park and have created local leagues on the court and utilizing the court multiple nights a week. “I’m bringing this back because the sand volleyball has been so popular,” Breckenridge City Manager Cynthia Northrop said. “It’s pretty low-level. It’s basically going to be $15,000 to $18,000 to add another sand volleyball court. We would not light it. What that allows them to do is to get a few more teams in and then finish at night under the lighted court. What it will also allow is someone else to play there other than the league.” Northrop said the city is excited about the reception the court has received and that a local business added to the court. Vault Nutrition and Wellness has donated bleachers that were placed outside of the court. “If you haven’t driven out there, on Wednesday nights, they have some leagues and they play until 11, 12 at night,” Northrop said. “Last time there were 14 teams so it’s been very popular. We’re excited people are using it. We appreciate that donation from Vault Nutrition of the bleachers out there.” The city manager added that there has been at least one complaint about the swing set not being covered like the new playground equipment that was installed earlier this year. “They keep mentioning this complaint and I understand it,” Northrop said. “The swing set doesn’t have a cover. (We’re) trying to get …a shade structure over the swing set so people can actually swing on it and not burn their legs.” Northrop estimated the cost to be between $15,000 and $25,000 for the improvement. The city manager said the city had approximately $143,408 left over from funds originally earmarked from the COOs for public work facilities.  Funds from that leftover money will go to pay for the additional improvements at the park. Any money left over will go to the street department. Previous park improvements made with COO funds have included new playground equipment, improvements at Foundation Park, lighting at Booker T Park, and volleyball and pickleball courts.  News
