Archive photo X By Mike Williams news@breckenridgeamerican.com The Lady Bucks basketball team faced struggles both on and off the court during the 2023-2024 basketball season. The team played much of the season without junior guard Destiny Jamison who was injured early in the volleyball season and suffered a second injury on the roster with Zaea Ragle getting hurt late in the season. Those injuries were compounded with a sudden coaching change during the district schedule. Non-district scheduleThe Lady Bucks opened the season with losses to Merkel, Abilene and City View before earning their first of 11 season wins Nov. 14, 2023 at Clyde. Defense led the way for the Lady Bucks while earning that first win. Breckenridge held the Lady Bulldogs to one field goal in the first quarter and never looked back. While the Lady Buckaroos dominated the game, history was made during the third quarter. Ragle lead the team with seven points in the third quarter, it was in the third quarter where the four-year varsity player scored her 1,000th career point. “It’s been amazing coaching Zaea. I’ve been lucky, actually, coaching Zaea the past four years,” Lady Bucks coach Bryan Goehring said after the game. “She’s a great student, great athlete. She’s in the top of her class in school and then with the accolades and everything that comes to her on the basketball court.” Although the Lady Bucks celebrated the win and Ragle’s memorable feat, the team struggled over the next two games losing to Haskell and Mineral Wells. The Lady Bucks won two games to close out November 2023 and open December while participating in their home tournament. The team earned a 58-31 win Nov. 30 over Hyde Park to open the tournament and defeated Grape Creek the next day, 72-32. The win over Grape Creek was the last for nearly a month at the Lady Bucks went on an 11-game losing streak going into the district schedule. The Lady Bucks did earn a pair of wins in the final tournament of the season which took place after district losses to Millsap, Brock and Comanche. Those wins game Dec. 27, 2023, against Lingleville and Dec. 28, 2023, against Spur at the Anson Lion’s Club Christmas Tournament. District ScheduleA three-game winning streak with wins over Dublin, Early and Peaster proved to be the final positive moment in Goehring’s coaching career with the Lady Bucks. After losses to Millsap, Brock, Goehring abruptly resigned Monday, Jan. 22 from his position as head coach of the Lady Buckaroos. The announcement was made public to parents and athletes via email from BHS Athletic Director Casey Pearce. Assistant Coach Sidnee Martinez was named interim head coach and was officially awarded the head coaching position later in the spring. With Martinez in charge, the Lady Bucks closed the district schedule with wins over Dublin, Early and Peaster to finish 6-8 in the district schedule and fifth place in the 8-3A standings, missing the playoffs by two games. When reviewing the nominations, the THSCA considers each students’ GPA, class rank, SAT and/or ACT score. The students receive points based on each criteria. The total number of points they receive determines which team they are placed on. The classification of the school is not a factor, and there’s not a limit on how many players can make a team. The best team a player can make is the Elite Team. To make the team, a player must have near perfect scores in all categories. The hierarchy then follows in this order: First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention. Sports
