Fort John historical marker dedicated by Waverly DAR chapter
The Revolutionary Dames Chapter of the NSDAR is committed to memorializing the unique, historic site in Bremer County of Janesville’s Fort John. The historic site will be commemorated during an historic marker re-dedication ceremony at noon on Saturday, July 27. The ceremony will feature Dr. Terrence Lindell, professor of history at Wartburg College, explaining the history and significance of the fort.
Iowans honored for volunteer service by governor
ANKENY — Area residents from Fayette, Buchnanan and Bremer counties were honored at the 2024 Governor’s Volunteer Awards held Tuesday, June 25 in Ankeny. Individual honorees included Alan Allbee West Union, Ellen Gaffney and Carol Kout of Independence, Mary Mossman of Winthrop, Michael Steele of Rowley, and Veryl Buchholz of Tripoli.

Band tradition continues
Ninety-nine years ago, area musicians gathered at the end of June 1925 to perform as the “All Bremer County Band” for a big Farm Bureau picnic in Plainfield. Robert Leach directed the group, and players dressed in suits and ties came from Denver, Readlyn, Sumner and Waverly to perform.
Floyd, Bremer, Fayette Counties to Share in $25 Million for Bridge Updates
A coalition of Floyd, Fayette, and Bremer counties, plus the City of Dubuque, will each share in $50 million in federal transportation funding. The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) RAISE grants will enhance safety in urban neighborhoods and replace some 29 bridges across Northeast Iowa. The program was funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) supported by U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley in 2021.
