Grass fire burning near Brentwood grows to 255 acres

( KRON ) — A grass fire was burning west of Brentwood in Contra Costa County Wednesday, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. Crews responded to the fire around 3:20 p.m. and are currently on the scene of the blaze, which is centered around Deer Valley Road and Balfour Road.

The fire has grown rapidly to 255 acres, according to Cal Fire. Residents of the Shadow Lakes home development on Balfour Road near West Country Club Drive are being evacuated, Brentwood police said.

Forward progress on the fire has been stopped. It is 75% contained.

Road closures are in effect along Deer Valley Road. Images from a PG&E camera showed heavy smoke emanating from the blaze. There was no immediate word on how the fire started or if structures were threatened.

Multiple agencies, including Con Fire and Cal Fire, are responding, fire officials told KRON4.com .
