(KRON) — A Brentwood Police Department officer narrowly survived after a 16-year-old boy stabbed him with a kitchen knife in a park downtown. The officer, who is still recovering from his injuries, sat in a Contra Costa County courtroom last week to watch the boy’s sentencing hearing.

A juvenile court judge handed down the maximum sentence allowed under California law: 6 years, BPD said. The boy’s name remains confidential because he was a minor when he stabbed the officer.

“This incident had a profound impact on not only our officer and his family, but also on the Department and our community,” the police department wrote.

The knife attack happened on October 11, 2023, in Brentwood City Park.

“As officers arrived on scene they contacted the 16-year-old juvenile. After numerous attempts to de-escalate the situation, the juvenile stabbed a Brentwood officer who was attempting to take the juvenile into custody,” BPD wrote.

The officer suffered life-threatening injuries that required hospitalization. Police said the boy has remained in juvenile hall ever since the attack.
