An Orrington man is accused of attacking an acquaintance with a hammer Wednesday night in Brewer.

Brewer police responded to an assault around 11 p.m. and found a man with serious injuries to his head on South Main Street, Public Safety Director Jason Moffitt said. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The attack was not random, Moffitt said. An investigation found the victim and the person who allegedly attacked him, Nicholas Ireland, knew each other.

Ireland, 29, allegedly blocked the road with his vehicle and went toward the victim with a hammer and gun, Moffitt said. The victim was hit multiple times with the hammer during an altercation.

Ireland then left the scene with property that belonged to the victim, Moffitt said. He was later arrested in Bangor and is in the Penobscot County Jail on charges of elevated aggravated assault, criminal threatening and robbery.
