Multiple rounds of storms cause damage; more rain end of week

In multiple rounds of storms that began last Friday, areas in and around Brewton suffered damage and power outages with many trees reportedly downed as a result of straight-line winds.
On Friday, areas south of Brewton around Munson and Jay, and Century, Fla., suffered with downed trees that caused wide-spread power outages. Power providers dispatched crews to those area hardest hit to work to restore power. A crew from Southern Pine Electric Cooperative assisted with the restoration through Sunday with many customers having power restored.
On Monday, areas just north of Brewton in the Appleton and Castleberry communities suffered in another round of storms that ramped up west of the area early in the morning. Trees were reportedly downed on Baggett Circle making the roadway impassable early Monday. Power was knocked out in that area as well as other scattered outages across the community.
Alabama Power and Southern Pine crews worked to quickly restore power as county workers made quick work of clearing trees from roadways hit with the storm’s high winds.
Volunteer Fire Departments were also called out for assistance in clearning the roads, including Appleton Volunteer Fire Department. Assistance was needed in areas of Appleton Road, Mason Mill Pond Road and Kirkland Road.
Trees were also downed hampering travel in the Damascus community.
Some reports of hail were made on Monday with dime-sized chunks falling in the North Brewton area.
Local meterologist Spinks Megginson was “live” most of the morning on his RedZone Weather Facebook page and the RedZone app. Reporting on strong winds, heavy rains, Megginson gave the “all clear” for the Brewton and surrounding communities just before 11 a.m. on Monday.
Calls to area volunteer fire departments continue throughout the day on Monday with reports of downed trees in the communities of Damascus, Boykin and Appleton.
In his forecast for the rest of the week, Megginson says we can expect more heavy rains on Friday with a 70 percent chance of rain and a 50 and 60 percent chance on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
