LEO Hosts Roundtable in Flint to Discuss Growing Michigan's Defense Manufacturing Workforce
Defense manufacturing drives $30 billion in economic activity, supporting more than 166,000 jobs and nearly 4,000 businesses. FLINT, Mich.— To adapt to a rapidly changing workforce and support the needs of Michiganders, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) held a roundtable in Flint with local, state and federal leaders to discuss how the local community can take advantage of the newly launched Michigan Maritime Manufacturing (M3) Initiative, a $50 million partnership with the Department of Defense aimed at building a workforce ready to lead the future of defense manufacturing.
Dow Receives Large Grant for Job retention
The State of Michigan has allocated a $120 million grant to Dow Chemical to retain roughly 5,000 jobs in the region. During its meeting on Tuesday, the Michigan Strategic Fund awarded the grant to Dow to support improvements to the company’s industrial park in Midland as well as its Auburn Operations facility. Dow says it’s working to expand its ability to manufacture materials that go into the creation of electric vehicle batteries. The State has also approved a 15-year State Essential Services Assessment property tax break and a 10-year extension to a Renaissance Zone tax incentive.

Dioxin Superfund Cleanup Meeting Scheduled for July 24
The next meeting of the Saginaw-Tittabawassee Rivers Contamination Community Advisory Group (CAG) will be held Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. The CAG meets to discuss issues related to the dioxin contamination of the Tittabawassee and Saginaw rivers and their cleanup. These meetings are open to the public and are mostly held once a quarter. A family- oriented event will be held this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Covenant Hills Camp and Retreat in Otisville. The festivities are being sponsored by The Crusaders for Children Michigan, along with help from many local businesses.
