Bridgeport Islanders Make Flurry Of Signings

With free agency open, NHL teams aren't the only ones making moves.

While the New York Islanders brought back Mike Reilly on a one-year deal before signing Anthony Duclair to a four-year contract, they turned their attention to bolstering the organization's depth.

On Tuesday, the Islanders signed Fredrik Karlstrom and Marc Gatcomb to one-year deals for Bridgeport, although the team has yet to confirm it.

On Wednesday, Bridgeport signed three players.

    Justin Gill

The first move of the day was the announcement that Justin Gill was signed to an AHL contract, the only one of the three signings of the day to be drafted by the organization.

Gill, a center, was selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NHL draft in Nashville. He has a chance to step right in and make an impact as Bridgeport is currently lacking center depth.

He has yet to sign his entry-level contract, which he will likely do after this season.

In his final QMJHL (Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League) season, he tallied 40 goals and 58 assists for 98 points in 65 games for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

That gave Gill back-to-back 90-point seasons as he recorded 93 points (44 goals, 49 assists) in 2022-23 for the Sherbrooke Phoenix.

Gill is an over-ager, currently 21 years old. He joins Matt Maggio and William Dufour on Bridgeport, who also had successful overage junior seasons after being drafted.

    Brian Pinho

Brian Pinho is back with Bridgeport for the second straight season after agreeing to another AHL contract with the organization.

Pinho logged top-six minutes last season, often centering Islanders prospects Maggio and Ruslan Iskhakov.

In 2023-24, Pinho scored just nine goals but was a top offensive player as a veteran player on a young and struggling team.

He was a big offensive output for the team, as he was second in both points and assists, 34 and 25, respectively.

    Wyatt Newpower

Wyatt Newpower, 26, is a right-handed defenseman from Minnesota.

He played all four of his college hockey years at the University of Connecticut (2016-2020), the final two years alongside Iskhakov, and served as team captain his senior season.

Bridgeport will become his third AHL team. He debuted with the Cleveland Monsters (Blue Jackets affiliate) in 2021 before spending the last three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins (Red Wings affiliate).

Newpower registered 10 points in his first two professional seasons and seven points in his last two. Some extra depth and experience will be joining the Bridgeport blue line, which is never a bad thing, with two youngsters -- Calle Odelius and Isaiah George -- coming aboard.

It is only July 3, so expect more moves from the New York Islanders and the Bridgeport Islanders. The organization is still working on finalizing both rosters ahead of the 2024-25 hockey season.
