Park Fire animation shows how it grew to historic size
Northern California's Park Fire is continuing to burn across multiple counties, nearly three weeks after it first ignited when a man pushed a burning car into a gully. A new map from CBS News' data team shows how it quickly grew to become one of the largest in state history. The Park Fire started on July 24 in Bidwell Park in Chico — just miles from the town of Paradise, which was decimated in the 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest in state history. Data from Cal Fire shows the blaze exploded within hours to more than 45,500 acres, and within three...
‘The Big One’ isn’t imminent for California, expert says
Monday’s 4.4 magnitude earthquake in El Sereno and last week’s 5.2 magnitude shaker in the Bakersfield area have served as wake-up calls for many Southern Californians. But they aren’t necessarily omens for a shaky, quaky immediate future.
A war of words on California ballot props
It’s one of the battles within California’s ballot measure wars: The wording that voters see about the propositions. Monday marked the end of the public inspection period for the state’s official Voter Guide, so there was a flurry of activity. The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association learned today it lost when a state appeals court overturned […]
California's AI Bill Threatens To Derail Open-Source Innovation
This month, the California State Assembly will vote on whether to pass Senate Bill 1047, the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act. While proponents tout amendments made "in direct response to" concerns voiced by "the open source community," critics of the bill argue that it would crush the development of open-source AI models.

The California State Assembly Select Committee on Fentanyl, Opioid Addiction and Overdose Prevention on Monday during an informational hearing discussed the urgency of combatting the rise in overdose deaths among youth in recent years primarily due to ingesting fentanyl. Between 2019 and 2021, drug overdoses became the third most common cause of death for U.S. children and teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Newsom blames oil companies for gas prices, but his own energy czar disagrees
(The Center Square) - California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a video blaming oil companies’ “greed” and “price gouging” for the state’s gas prices, which, at an average of $4.60 per gallon, are $1.16 above the national average. Newsom’s own energy commissioner, however, disagrees, noting in May testimony that no “price gouging” has been found and that “increasing supply in the market” would best “protect consumers.” Total taxes and fees add up to approximately $1.62 to the cost of each gallon of gasoline sold in the...

Homeless Californians react to Newsom's crackdown
CALIFORNIA, USA — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s message on homelessness in recent weeks has been clear: The state will no longer tolerate encampments, and cities shouldn’t either. Californians who live on the streets, as well as the outreach workers who support them, say they’re already feeling the difference. Places where someone used to be able to pitch a tent and sleep in peace have suddenly become inhospitable. Police seem to be clearing camps more often and more aggressively, and are less likely to give advance notice before they come in with bulldozers and trash compactors, according to anecdotal reports in some cities. Even in cities where officials said publicly nothing would change, unhoused people and activists say it’s become harder to be homeless.
