Bridgeville, Pa.-based Universal Stainless & Alloy Products Inc. (USAP) and Local 2332-2 of the United Steelworkers earlier this month postponed their collective bargaining agreement to work out a better labor deal.

“We are pleased to extend the negotiating time frame to allow for a mutually agreeable labor agreement without disruption to the operations and to continue to serve our customers’ needs,” said Christopher Zimmer, USAP’s president and CEO, in a July 1 statement.

The 17-day continuance covers the hourly production and maintenance employees at USAP’s North Jackson, Ohio, facility and was subject to a seven-day termination notice by either the company or the Youngstown, Ohio, union.

During the continuance, the employees will work under the terms and conditions of the prior agreement, which otherwise would have expired at midnight on June 30, according to USAP, which manufactures and markets semi-finished and finished specialty steels, including stainless steel, nickel alloys, tool steel and certain other alloyed steels that are used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, energy, and heavy equipment manufacturing.

The company’s facilities in Dunkirk, N.Y., and in Bridgeville and Titusville, Pa., are covered by separate collective bargaining agreements and are not affected by the current negotiations, according to USAP.
