New Research Suggests Few People Get Sick After Bite from Ticks Infected with Powassan Virus
Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst-based New England Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases (NEWVEC) have published new findings on Powassan virus, an emerging tick-borne illness that can cause life-threatening encephalitis and meningitis. The study reports that people bitten by black-legged (or deer) ticks that tested positive for the virus did not show signs or symptoms of disease.

Gallery A3 announces its 9th Annual Juried Show, on display from August 1-31, 2024. “The theme is IMPERMANENCE,” noted exhibit co-coordinator Paula Hite, “embracing art that speaks to the ever-changing, transient, and often cyclical nature of all things as experienced in the realm of human relationships and emotions and as encountered in the material and natural worlds.” The juror, Maria Timina, is the Curator of Russian and European Art at the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College. An Opening Reception will be on Thursday, August 1, 5-8:00 pm, and an online Art Forum, open to the public, is scheduled for Thursday, August 15, at 7:30 pm.
