A shooter who fired multiple shots outside Minneapolis home was arrested by police as he tried to flee through a window.

Officers were sent to the 2900 block of Russell Avenue North just before 6 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter report. When police arrived, witnesses told them that a man fired several shots and entered a detached garage. The gunman then left the garage, fired more shots, and entered an occupied home.

A perimeter was set around the property, and officers started communicating with people inside, which is how they saw a child peering out a window. Within half an hour, several adults and children, including a 5-year-old, escaped the house. With the help of the homeowner, a dog was also safely brought out.

The gunman – a 21-year-old man – jumped out a window and tried to run from the scene, but Hennepin County deputies arrested him.

Once officers believed the home was empty, a Minneapolis SWAT team and a drone ensured the home was secure.

“This is the second time this week that officers have secured a perimeter and used resources to peacefully resolve a tense situation,” said Chief O’Hara. “I am proud of our officers who continue to use de-escalation to control dangerous situations.”

The 21-year-old was booked into Hennepin County Jail, and a woman was booked as well after she interfered with officers' actions. The residents were allowed to return after officers called in a board-up service to secure the window the shooter used when he fled.
