Minneapolis Police Department's "Operation Safe Summer III" resulted in a higher number of illegal gun seizures than the previous two years.

Police Chief Brian O'Hara said law enforcement confiscated 45 guns and made 98 arrests during the operation from July 29 to Aug. 3. In comparison, 38 firearms were recovered in 2023 along with 100 arrests, while the 2022 operation resulted in 38 guns off the streets and 97 arrests.

O'Hara said over 2,300 grams of narcotics, 1,200 fentanyl pills, and $10,000 were collected during this year's operation.

Police says the purpose of "Operation Safe Summer" is to target violent offenders who negatively and disproportionately impact Minneapolis neighborhoods.

"The proliferation of illegal guns and narcotics have been an ongoing issue for the city of Minneapolis," O'Hara said. "I am incredibly proud of the work of our officers and all of our partner agencies to make a lasting impact on gun violence and narcotics activity in the city."
