An alleged joy ride in a stolen car turned into a shooting that left four minors injured, one of them seriously, in Minneapolis overnight.

It happened early Sunday morning near West Broadway and Girard Avenue on the city's north side. According to the Minneapolis Police Department, five youths were riding in a stolen Kia when a sedan began following them; a short time later, someone in the sedan opened fire on the Kia.

Three of the victims received non-life-threatening gunshot wounds; however, the fourth victim, a girl, was shot in the head, police say.

She is believed to be in critical, but stable, condition. The one minor who wasn't shot was taken into custody.

In comments to press at the scene, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said two of the juveniles involved were arrested two weeks earlier for joyriding in another stolen vehicle.

"The cars that are being stolen here, particularly among juveniles, are connected to more and more serious crimes. And that's across the board, robberies, assaults, you name it," O'Hara said. "It just shows really brazen and callous behavior, they don't care about their own lives, let alone the lives of other people."

O'Hara also said that police "are doing everything that we can in response to this, but we can't keep responding after the fact, we can't keep arresting these kids. More needs to be done to deter this type of activity in the first place."

There's no word yet on whether any suspects have been arrested.
