A fight at a homeless encampment led to a fatal shooting Monday evening in Minneapolis.

Officers from the 3rd Precinct responded to the shooting just after 5 p.m. and found a 33-year-old man lying on the sidewalk of the 3300 block of 3 rd Avenue South.

The man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died.

Early information shows that a large fight broke out inside a homeless encampment that spilled out into the street, and shots were fired. The injured man walked down the sidewalk and collapsed.

The homeless encampment on a vacant lot on the 3300 block of 3 rd Avenue South has been cleared.

"This senseless loss of life is a harsh reminder of the violence that continues to be all too common," said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. "I am thankful that this encampment was cleared before additional violent crime could occur in that neighborhood."

Investigators are working to determine what led up to the fight and the shooting, and there have been no arrests made yet.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the man's name along with his cause and manner of death at a later time.
