Bob Mould will sit in with Seth Meyers' 8G Band during their final show this week

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Seth Meyers' star-studded Late Night house band, The 8G Band, would be a casualty of cutbacks at NBC.

On Tuesday, with the band's final performance just days away, the show announced that Bob Mould will sit in with The 8G Band during its final show on Thursday, Aug. 22.

The 8G Band has featured a rotating cast of indie rock notables since debuting in February 2014. The group was led by comedian (and musician) Fred Armisen, who has only occasionally appeared during recent seasons, and included Les Savy Fav's Seth Jabour and Syd Butler and Girls Against Boys' Eli Janney. Marnie Stern was also a member until 2022.

Mould, singer of Minneapolis rock royalty Hüsker Dü, is among the musicians who have sat in with the band, having played with the group for a full week in 2014. He returns for the final night alongside Armisen, who has previously said he's a big Hüsker Dü fan .

“Every day was an exciting experience — new songs to learn, a wide variety of interesting guests, and those super fresh and highly entertaining Seth monologues," Mould says of the experience.

"I'm humbled to be a small part of Thursday's farewell to The 8G Band. It's the end of an amazing run, it's bittersweet for certain, and I'm hoping NBC will let us turn up extra loud!”

Thursday's Late Night appearance isn't the first time Mould has been in the spotlight recently.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz , after being named the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, talked about Hüsker Dü being a band he loves.

For his part, Mould has thrown his support behind Harris, who is expected to accept the Democratic nomination the same night as Mould's appearance with The 8G Band.

“It's been quite a while since I've felt so good about the direction of the USA,” Mould said in a statement. “It's amazing to see and feel this sudden change. The country is rallying around newfound energy and joy, the hope for a better and brighter future, and I'm ready to help the cause in any way I can.”

Mould will embark on a two-month solo tour beginning in September. However, the tour isn't making a stop in Minnesota.
